Story of the GranniesThe name Granny Cart Gangstas derived from some of our founding member’s pedestrian lifestyle in San Francisco; its ‘gangsta’ (a reappropriation of the word to connote high approval) to be able to use a ‘granny cart’ in the busy streets of San Francisco. We are an all-female, women-of-color comedy troupe. We poke fun at pervasive media representation of women, pop culture, consumerism, and our daily life.

The theater that gave birth and nurtured GCG is called Bindlestiff Studio (the ‘Stiff), located in the SOMA district of San Francisco. All the members have taken at least one of the stand-up, sketch comedy, or acting workshops at the ‘Stiff at one point or another and caught the comedy/theater bug. Each of us have our own particular skills whether it be in writing, filmmaking, acting, directing, makeup, stand up comedy, etc. We aim to teach other these skills in order to excel in our selected form of artistry, but our one common indulgence is laughter.
